Altrad NSG has agreed to sponsor a talented racing driver from Cheshire as he bids to win a prestigious championship.

The scaffolding and industrial maintenance specialist is backing 26-year-old Tom Hodgson as he gets set to take part in the Avon Tyres Northern Formula Ford Championship.

Tom, who works as an engineer for a car firm in Crewe, will start the racing in season in April with the backing of Altrad NSG, who have agreed to pay for racing car tyres and entry costs to all races.

Tom said: "This is a fantastic boost for me as it will cover half of the team costs for the season, which runs from April to October. I have been a mechanic since the age of 16 but it was always my dream to race.

"I was lucky enough to start in the Formula Ford Championships last year and came second, but with the support of Altrad NSG, I am definitely aiming for first place this year. This is one of the longest established championships in England and it is a privilege to race in, so I am very grateful to Altrad NSG and managing director Mike Carr for helping me to compete for another season."

The Avon Tyres Northern Formula Ford Championship is organised by the British Racing & Sports Car Club and was launched in 1967. Racing tracks include Oulton Park, Anglesey Circuit and Donnington Park.

As part of the sponsorship deal, Tom's team will be named Hodgson-Altrad Racing, and Altrad NSG will be the main sponsor featured on the car chassis and promotional material.

Mike Carr, Altrad NSG MD, said: "Tom is an extremely talented young man and we are delighted to be able to support him in the forthcoming season. As a business we take our CSR and community work very seriously and provide sponsorship to a number of sports clubs and teams across the North West and North Wales."

Tom, who lives in Congleton, added: "I race in the Post-1990 class with a Ford Swift and we have eight races across the North West starting at Oulton Park on April 12. It is expensive to run a car and a team for the duration and is extremely competitive. Therefore it is essential to have the backing of a good sponsor and in Altrad NSG I believe I have the support that can take me one better this year and to first place.

"The class is a single seater with up to 20 other competitors, reaching speeds of up to 140mph. I have loved racing since I was a boy and each time I drive feels very special - I am proud to have such a strong team behind me."

Altrad NSG works with a range of blue chip construction clients across the UK, providing scaffolding and rope access systems, insulation, painting, coatings, blasting and industrial cleaning. Core sectors include on and offshore oil and gas, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, power generation (including nuclear), steel production, shipbuilding, rail and civil infrastructure.
