NSG UK awarded seventh consecutive Gold Medal for safety excellence

Posted 18 April 2012

NSG UK has achieved its seventh consecutive Gold Standard for excellence in health and safety at its Ineos Chlor site in Runcorn.

The Deeside based firm, which operates at sites across the UK, was awarded a Gold Medal for Occupational Health & Safety, by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA).

The award was presented by the RoSPA to recognise the company's achievement and commitment to raising the standards of health and safety management. NSG UK is now setting its sights on three more years of continuous health and safety success at its Runcorn site to achieve a RoSPA President's Award - presented to organisations who achieve 10 or more years of consecutive Gold standard.

Howard Satchell, Compliance Manager at NSG UK, said: "Safety is paramount to the business so we are delighted to be recognised with our seventh consecutive RoSPA Gold Award. Alongside our British Safety Council Five Star Award, it demonstrates to our clients and potential customers that we are a responsible and conscientious business that places health and safety as top priority.

"We have 130 staff at our Ineos Chlor site, providing multi-discipline maintenance works including scaffolding, rope access, painting and industrial cleaning, as well as thermal insulation and sheet metal work, together with road gritting, rigging and slinging and high pressure water jetting. We had to provide RoSPA with strong evidence of best practice health and safety management, highlighting our excellent track record over the past year and safety schemes such as 'Watch What You're Doing'."

Ineos Chlor is a leading global manufacturer of chlorine and PVC - its Runcorn site is the company's biggest in the UK.

Mr Satchell added: "NSG has also been awarded an ancillary asbestos license for scaffolding - few other scaffolders hold this license, and we had to undergo rigorous assessment by the HSE. This means we are able to provide access to asbestos removal sites and is another endorsement of our quality and robust health and safety procedures."

NSG UK is one of the UK's biggest scaffolding firms, with a 450-strong workforce providing scaffolding, painting and blasting, thermal insulation and a variety of other industrial services to multi-million pound projects across the UK.

NSG UK managing director Mike Carr said: "We work closely with our employees and customers to continually improve our performance, and the Gold Medal is tribute to the hard work and dedication of the workforce. This is the seventh year on the run that our safety performance at Ineos Chlor has been recognised on a national level and we will endeavour to keep up our excellent record."

Mr Satchell said that NSG UK continually reviews its health and safety performance and ensures that all employees are fully trained and aware of their responsibilities.

"Our policies and procedures are always being checked over to see if we can improve," he said. "This, alongside our interaction and monitoring of the workforce ensures that we keep health and safety at the highest possible level."

NSG works in a variety of sectors, maintaining growth over the last year in the construction and engineering sectors while expanding into the rail, social housing, marine and off-shore, oil and gas, and nuclear sectors.
