NSG UK continued its support of Shrewsbury House Youth Centre by providing a stage for the annual Summer Fair

Shrewsbury House Youth Centre in Everton held its annual summer fair at the weekend, with free staging provided by NSG UK.

The fair - which was fortunate enough to avoid the recent downpours - featured donkey rides, a bouncy castle, bric-a-brac stalls and a large stage which played host to a variety of local bands and community dance and music groups.

The Shewsy, as it is known in the area, is one of Merseyside's most historic youth centres, opening in 1903 and still catering for hundreds of local children and teenagers with sports, music and many other activities on offer.

Club chairman John Hutchinson said: "Our summer fair is one of the highlights of the year and once again it was very well supported by members of the community, who came out in force to enjoy the day. We had some fantastic young musicians on stage - kindly provided free of charge by NSG UK - as well as brilliant dance groups who we have to thank for performing on the day.

"Also thanks to all the volunteer workers who helped out, manning stalls and providing entertainment - it was a great atmosphere all round and the money generated will help to support further our work providing activities and a safe environment for the young people of the area."

The bandstand was supplied and erected for free by scaffolding giant NSG UK, which has created a training and skills programme for teenagers who attend the club.

NSG UK scaffolding supervisor Damien Cummings, a former Shrewsbury House club member, said: "We have a great relationship with the Shewsy and were delighted to provide the staging for their summer fair. Over the past few years NSG has donated thousands of pounds to the centre which has gone a long way to improving the facilities and developing more activities for the youngsters.

"NSG UK also launched a scheme in which lads from the club could get scaffolding training with our training partner Simian Risk, with those successful being taken on by the company. We already have two full time scaffolders working for NSG who used to be members here and we are hoping to create more opportunities in the future.

"The Shewsy is a great club and as a former member myself I know how important it is to give young people in the area a safe place to go and play sports, create music or just to meet friends."

Shrewsbury House Youth Centre is open five evenings a week, Monday to Friday - for more information visit www.shrewsburyhouse.org.uk or call 0151 207 0725.
